I was delighted this morning to receive news that I have been invited to speak at the Institute of Education, University of London. The conference, 'Musicians in the Community: Musicianship in Action', will look at all aspects of music outside of professional circles, from education and outreach, to leadership and musicians working across genres.
My paper is titled 'Amateur Modernists or Modernist Amateurs: Finding a Place for the Brass Band in Contemporary Music-Making' and will look to explore the way the brass band has evolved in recent years in comparison to its professional counterparts.
I am thoroughly excited to be presenting in this environment alongside academics from many other institutions, including Jonathan Farey (Royal Academy of Music), who premiered my concerto for amplified French Horn back in 2012.
The conference will take place in London on 11th November 2014 and more information can be found here.
